I have been here twice; once to see Ash Breeze in concert, and on 4/20/16 to see Arsenic and Old Lace. Staff was very nice, and the play was great. Only complaints are the seating and temperature. Seats are from the 1920's -- too small and crowded together. Time for a seat upgrade. They need a few ceiling fans, or better air conditioning. The air was not moving. I had to go into the hall at intermission to cool down. I do plan to go back and see more plays.
The venue was nice, the seats are a little small for a tall guy like myself but the show was good enough that I really didn't notice. The staff was very friendly and concessions were provided at charge.
Be prepared to fall in love and be addicted. CFRT will blow you away. For the size of this smallish town theater, it packs a HUGE punch. Nearly every seat in the house is a premium seat as compared to a larger theater, and the tickets are half the price. You are up close and personal to all the action and every show leaves you wanting more. If you have been on the fence about attending ANY show at Cape Fear Regional Theater, you need to bite the bullet and go see a show. There is careful thought, energy and heart put into each production and Fayetteville is spoiled to have such a lively little theater in their hands. Well done CFRT. Cannot wait to see what you do next!
TLDR; Cape fear does a good job, needs some elbow grease to be a great job but I will definitely be there for the 2017, 2018 season.
The skill range of actors was interesting. There was a child that was better than average who played Noah. But then the actor that played his father might as well have recited his lines from backstage as he was lifeless, I get that Noah's father is broken and defeated but there is a way to convey those emotions that won't bore the audience (go watch Fences with Denzel). The rest of the cast was very pleasant to watch and we're well cast.
The main problem had to do with the movements on stage, after the 6th time an actor turned their back while still reciting a line I stopped counting. The corography had no soul. There was a few staging issues. Finally there was a park bench left on stage that blocked view of a whole scene for the front rows.
The set was fantastic, the use of hidden doors and rotating walls was really well done, and the way the Moon was portrayed was very surprising and honestly a highlight of the show.
As a whole the musical was a pleasurable experience but it felt unpolished which is uncharacteristic considering it was the second to last showing.
It is amazing and has great opportunities for the whole family
The production I attended was Caroline or change in the 2016, 2017 season.
The music in this production was well done and sounded professional.
First, I will admit that the seating is a little cozy. As long as you stay open minded and try not to let it bother you, the performances will quickly take your mind off the seating. Other than that, I prefer the intimacy of this theater better than the grandeur of DPAC. The staff are very polite and efficient and the plays are so entertaining. From what I understand the majority of the actors and actresses are from all over the place and they do a great job of selecting the right character for the role. We've seen "The Three Musketeers", "The Wiz", and "The Hounds of Baskerville", all of which were fantastic and the commitment of the actors/actresses draws you into the story they're playing out. I would watch "The Wiz" over and over again, they did such a fantastic job, and "The Hounds of Baskerville", while supported by many, was acted out by only 5 performers who put on a fantastic show as they juggled through their comedic roles. I can't say enough good things. We will be back as often as possible!
Overall rating: 3.5/5 (I would attend again.)
